Platelet Rich Plasma

A breakthrough in regenerative medicine

What is PRP?

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is a concentrated preparation of platelets and their associated growth factors within a small volume of plasma all derived from your very own blood cells. PRP therapy is used to promote tissue regeneration and remodeling by delivering growth factors in high concentrations to the treated site. It is an establish therapy for skin rejuvenation and hair restoration.

How is PRP obtained?

The Technique of obtaining PRP involves drawing blood and then spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the components: platelet rich plasma, platelet poor plasma, red blood cells, and white blood cells. The PRP can then be drawn up and injected into the treatment site

What are the benefits of PRP?

Injection of PRP has many exciting applications within the medical field. By injecting PRP, it activates platelets causing them to release regenerative growth factors which in turn initiates the healing response by attracting stem cells, stimulating cell growth, tissue remodeling, and new collagen deposition. As a skin care treatment this translates to improved skin tone and texture, diminishing fine lines and wrinkles, increased skin thickness and elasticity. It can also be used to improve scarring and and regenerate hair growth. Most importantly, your skin maintains a natural-looking appearance after treatment. In areas such as the tear trough region where other products may be too bulky or create and odd appearance, PRP is a wonderful alternative.

Platelet-Rich Plasma treatments have shown effectiveness in addressing various skin care conditions. Some of the common skin concerns that PRP can help improve include:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles: PRP injections stimulate collagen production, leading to smoother and firmer skin, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Scars: Whether caused by acne, injuries, or surgical procedures, PRP can aid in reducing the visibility of scars by promoting tissue repair and regeneration.

  • Uneven skin tone and texture: PRP treatments can help improve skin texture by enhancing collagen and elastin production, resulting in a more even and smoother complexion.

  • Sun damage: PRP can assist in reversing the effects of sun damage by rejuvenating the skin, reducing pigmentation issues, and improving overall skin quality.

  • Skin laxity: PRP injections can increase the elasticity and firmness of the skin, providing a more youthful and lifted appearance.

  • Under-eye circles and hollows: PRP can be used to address dark circles and hollows under the eyes, improving the volume and revitalizing the delicate skin in that area.

Is there any downtime?

Your skin may feel tight, dry, swollen, or sensitive for 1-3 days post procedure. You may want to avoid intense activity or sun exposure during this time as you allow any redness or swelling to go down.

Is it safe?

Because PRP is derived from your own blood cells, it removes the concern for disease transmission and almost eliminates the risk of allergic reaction. It is a very safe and effective treatment with many applications. Though rare, side effects can occur which include skin redness, bruising, infection, bleeding, pain or itching at injection site, or swelling. Some may experience headaches, nausea, dizziness or fainting from the process of drawing blood. If you have difficulty with blood draws please discuss this with me prior to procedure.

Who is not a candidate for PRP treatment?

If you have any of the following conditions then PRP treatments are not recommended: platelet disfunction syndrome, critically low platelets, hemodynamic instability, pregnancy or breastfeeding, ongoing infection, urticaria, autoimmune disease, or cancer. Consistent use of NSAID medications within 48 hours prior to treatment should be avoided.

When will I see results?

It is important to understand that results are not expected immediately. You should start to see results in about 3 weeks, with continued gradual improvement over the next 6-12 months. Generally a series of 3 treatments is recommended for optimal results. Maintenance is advised once - twice a year.

Who performs my procedure?

I myself, Dr. Megan Bertke, perform all procedures, consultations, and follow up appointments.

What should I expect at my appointment?

I always get a brief medical history to ensure there are no contraindications to treatment. I will answer any questions you have and take photos before the procedure for documentation and comparison purposes that will be kept confidential unless you give your expressed consent to use them for any promotional purposes. Once initial photos are taken, I will apply numbing cream to the treatment site and perform the blood draw. As we give the anesthetic cream time to take effect, the blood is processed in the centrifuge. This usually takes about 10 minutes. Once ready I use the PRP in the desired area. After your treatment I retake photos and go over post-treatment recommendations. The entire visit usually takes 45-60 minutes. The majority of the time is spent discussing your goals of treatment and answering questions so that you get the best possible outcome and feel completely comfortable with the procedure.

What if I am not sure if PRP is right for me?

That’s what I am here for! Schedule a facial consultation with me so that we can discuss your aesthetic goals. You will get personalized recommendations for treatments and skin care that would most benefit you and I can answer any questions you may have.
